Injectable Fillers

Treatment with injectable fillers is used to enhance the contour of the face, particularly as a remedy for wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. Juvéderm, Sculptra and Perlane are fillers that are used to correct signs of aging, but are made from slightly different ingredients and produce somewhat different results.

Sculptra is an injectable, long lasting polymer filler comprised of poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) and sterile water. The PLA particles work to stimulate new collagen growth in the skin. Juvéderm is also long lasting, but is made of a stabilized hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body??it aids in delivering nutrients to the skin and acts as a cell protector. As a filler, Juvéderm helps to add structure and volume, and is known for its smooth consistency.

Like Juvéderm, Perlane is made with hyaluronic acid, but is especially effective for deeper folds and cheek augmentation with its larger sized hyaluronic acid particles.

Who Uses Injectable Fillers?

Because it is difficult for an individual to know what injectable filler will best suit their needs, we encourage you to consult with qualified plastic surgeon Dr. Bourhill. Please refer to the list below to learn about some of the conditions the different products treat.

  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Lipotrophy, facial fat loss, in people with HIV

  • Depressed scars
  • Wrinkles, lines and creases
  • Facial contour enhancement, including the lips

  • Dermal atrophy from disease

What is Treatment Like?

First, the skin is cleansed with antiseptic and the injection sites are marked. A topical anesthetic or numbing cream may be used to help ease any pain. Dr. Bourhill will then inject the product. Perlane and Juvéderm are both injected into the mid-to-deep dermis, while Sculptra is injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer. Dr. Bourhill may then lightly massage the area to ensure that the product is distributed smoothly and evenly.

How Long Does it Last?

No injectable filler product is a permanent wrinkle solution. Additional treatments are needed for best results. Initial Sculptra treatments are known to last about two years; Perlane, approximately six months; and Juvéderm, between six to twelve months.

Possible side effects include the development of granulomas, redness, bruising, bleeding, itching, and swelling. If your symptoms have not disappeared within one week after treatment, or if any existing symptom worsens, please seek medical help.
